Import/Export not working

Import/Export not working

Postby gcanter » 10 Nov 2010, 01:58

I have downloaded and installed version 0.4.3 on a MacPro using Mac OS X 10.6.3. I tried to export the entries of one database to another by doing the following :

I exported the entries of a KeePassX db called export.kdb to a KeePass XML file (export.xml). I then got out of KeePassX and opened another db (import.kdb). I clicked on File --> Import From --> KeePassX XML (*.xml). I then selected the export.xml file and went thru setting up a password and re-typing the password. At this point the app opened up the export.xml file instead of importing the export.xml file into the import.kdb database.

So - what did I do wrong ? Normally when you import something the app asks for the file and then presto ! - the imported entries show up in the app.

I have tried to Google and search the KeePassX FAQ and forums but I have had no luck. I even tried the beta code with the Auto-Typing but it did the same thing.

All clues, hints, explanations are warmly welcome. Thanks.

I'm having exactly the same problem on Windows 7 using KeepassX 0.4.3.

I am trying to merge two different versions of a keepassx database using the import feature. When I import the xml file, the program opens up a new unsaved database with the contents of xml database. The original database is unchanged.

I was using this program because it worked across Windows and Mac but without this feature working I will probably try something else.

I finally gave up on this feature and just hand coded the XML file of one file into another. My personal feeling is this is just an example of the Open Source conundrum - sometimes you get great stuff that "just works" and sometimes you don't. Since it is free I cannot complain, but I would think that it would be better just to leave the feature out completely until it actually works. However, unless someone works to fix it then it will not work unless the developers running the project decide it is important to work on it (or someone pays a bounty to move it up in importance).

Good points re OSS. Usually it is better to move on rather than complain I find, but it is important to document issues otherwise it can never be fixed and it can sometimes help others to know it is a known problem. I am having a look at lastpass now to see whether it can do what I am looking for.

PS The idea to manually merge the xml files is probably not too difficult, thanks for that. :)

I am using the Windows-specific project for my work computer (http://keepass.info/) and I just saved my work password database in the old version and exported it to XML - which KeePassX reads perfectly fine. I tested this on KeePassX (Windows version). I am using the same key file and password on everything so those variables are covered. I then exported my Mac version of KeePassX to an XML file and then cut and pasted the Windows entries in the Windows XML file to the Mac XML file. After this procedure I have an XML file of both entries combined. This combined file is my "master" file and I just need to keep it in sync with my Windows file.

Mercurial over SSH should fit the bill fine for this, though I have heard of others using Drop Box (http://www.dropbox.com/) with both a password and a key file. They recommend keeping the key file on a portable flash drive, though I would keep it on 2 drives as my flash drives seem to die on a regular basis.

Or you could pitch in by fixing the problems yourself and submitting a patch. That is what I did for Auto-Type on the Mac. And if you are not competent to solve the problems then you could at least donate to those who are. There have been several hundred downloads of my Auto-Type version and only a single donation. With such a lack of support it is no wonder no one is interested in helping mere complainers out.

I actually said I didn't want to complain about it...because neither party has any obligation with a free application - and yet you are calling me a "mere complainer"! So according to you just reporting a problem is taken as a complaint, when I thought I was just sharing information!
